The warm weather got me thinking about traveling and my fitness routine. Whenever I travel, if it’s for a lengthy trip, I feel like I need to do a little something to stay on top of things. I just miss working out! So what can you do when on vacation that doesn’t involve a big trip to the gym? Let’s talk about travel and fitness.
Consider a break
First of all, breaks never hurt anybody. In fact, they can be good for you—physically and mentally. You can give your body and mind a break from the routine and recharge. If you do, you may just find that when you come back you’re ready for more and can break through any plateaus you may have hit or just feel more energized about your fitness routine. But should you choose to keep up with your fitness habits on vacation, there are things you can do without heading off to the gym.
Running
Running is a fun way to see wherever you’re visiting. Get up early, take a nice run, shower, and you’re ready for a fun day of sightseeing, with more energy and your workout done for the day. All you need is a pair of shoes and some workout clothes, and you’re ready to sweat!
Try some new activities
Does the hotel you’re staying at offer any activities like paddle boarding, tennis, or hiking? Many times, they do! They may even offer some different exercise classes. But you can certainly get some exercise doing other activities unique to the area, and the hotel can help. Check out some activities that you may not normally try and get a different kind of workout!
Strength training
Want to do some strength training? You can head to the gym, if your hotel has one, but you can also do some things from the comfort of your room or somewhere on the hotel grounds, if you choose. In that case, compound exercises are your best bet. These are things like squats, lunges, push-ups—things that utilize multiple muscle groups. Burpees, jump squats, triceps dips, biceps curls with a tote bag or something like that can be done too.
One piece of equipment you can bring with you that takes up very little space is a set of resistance bands. These have a tiny footprint yet pack quite a punch if you are creative. There are many exercises you can do with these that add some resistance and can keep you in good shape while you’re off in a distant land.
Another piece of equipment that the hotel will provide you is a chair. There are many things you can do with a chair that help keep you moving and strong. Chair squats, hip thrusts, triceps dips, bridges with your feet on the chair, incline or decline push ups, step ups, and the list goes on and on.
