If you’re a runner, chances are, you’ve heard different things about when to replace your running shoes. Oftentimes, it’s when you hit ~500 miles. Sometimes, it’s less, like 300 or so miles. Other times, it’s in terms of time, like every 3 to 6 months.

So what’s the deal?

Well, it’s different for everyone. People often give estimates that are typical for most, but you have to figure out what’s right for you.

Some shoes last longer, some break down pretty quickly.

You may run 500 miles in 6 months while someone else runs maybe 300 miles in the same time. So, time may not the best way to gauge your shoe replacement.

A good way is to watch the wear on the bottom of your shoes. If you see uneven wear or that the treads are worn smooth in places, they may need replacing. Are they looking kind of beat up? Is the midsole wrinkling? Maybe it’s time for new shoes.

More than anything, listen to your body.

Are your feet or legs feeling more worn down after runs? Do you shoes feel like they fit differently now than they did when you got them? Shoes stretch out over time, the padding wears out. All of this can lead to your body not being as supported as it needs to be.

So, keep an eye on the time/mileage, but more so, check out the bottoms of your shoes! Take stock of how your body feels after your runs. You’ll learn when you need a new pair of beautiful shoes!
